Swimming lessons for children
Swimming is a useful skill that can be learned at any age. In a country with thousands of lakes and a strong tradition of tourism, swimming skills provide safety and opportunities for adventure. Kuohu offers a wide range of swimming lessons, starting from the basics.
A play-oriented swimming session in the teaching pool for 3–4-year-olds. The aim is to get children to enjoy being in the water. First, they get to know the new environment, practise blowing into the water, splashing, floating, kicking, pulling themselves along with their arms, and moving around in the water in different ways through play. A variety of aids are used in a versatile and fun way. The water play session progresses according to the skill level of the group, taking each individual into account. The children are under the supervision of the swimming instructors throughout the lesson, and parents do not need to participate in the teaching.
For children aged 5–8 who cannot yet swim. The swimming lessons are play-based and aimed at children who are afraid of water. The aim is to practise getting wet, floating, sliding, moving independently in the water and basic swimming techniques (breaststroke and basic backstroke) without focusing on performance. The teaching progresses according to the skill level of the group, taking each individual into account. During the swimming school, it is possible to complete an early skills badge. At the end of the course, each participant will receive a swimming logbook/swimming book, in which their achievements during the swimming school will be recorded, as well as a sticker/beginner’s badge. The children are the responsibility of the swimming instructor for the entire lesson, and parents do not need to participate in the lessons. On the first day, an information session will be held in the group changing room approximately 10 minutes before the course begins.
For children aged 5–7 and 8–12 who cannot yet swim. The aim of the swimming school is to learn how to dip, float, slide, move independently in the water and learn basic swimming techniques (breaststroke and basic backstroke). Beginners’ swimming lessons give children the basic skills they need to learn to swim. The aim is to learn to swim 10 metres and pass the beginners’ test. Depending on the skill level of the older group, other swimming techniques may also be taught. Children are under the supervision of the swimming instructor for the entire lesson; parents do not need to participate in the lessons.
For children aged 5–8 whose swimming skills do not yet meet the basic swimming skills requirement set by SUH, i.e. swimming 10 metres continuously in a large pool. The admission requirement for the group is that the child can do three of the following: glide, jump into deep water, dive for an object at chest depth or throw a canister + pull 5 metres (at least 6 points from the beginner’s badge tests). In addition, the child must be able to move independently and confidently in the water. The beginner’s swimming school revises the tasks covered in the beginner’s swimming school or equivalent. The goal is to achieve the 10-metre beginner’s swimming skill and the beginner’s swimming badge. Once this goal has been achieved, the child can enrol in the beginner’s technique swimming school. Children who have not attended beginner’s swimming school can still participate in the group if they are confident in the water and have the required skills. Children are under the supervision of the swimming instructor for the entire lesson; parents do not need to participate in the lessons.
For 6–9-year-olds who can swim at least 10 metres in a fitness pool, front and back. The lessons continue from beginner swimming styles to proper swimming techniques, taking into account the level of the group, with the aim of achieving 25 and 50 metre swimming skills and a hobby badge. Most of the lessons are held in the fitness pool. The children are under the supervision of the swimming instructor for the entire lesson, and parents do not need to participate in the lessons.
The technical swimming school is aimed at children who are used to swimming in a fitness pool and can swim at least 25 metres front crawl and backstroke. The aim of the swimming school is to progress from basic swimming styles to proper swimming techniques: front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke. In addition, the swimming school deepens water skills by practising various jumps, dives and water rescue.
For 8–12-year-olds who have the skills required for the SUH hobby badge, i.e. can swim 25 metres front crawl AND 25 metres backstroke in a fitness pool. The course progresses to longer swimming distances and more demanding water skills using the correct techniques. The aim of the course is to complete the Nordic 200-metre swimming proficiency test and proficiency badge. The lessons focus on improving technique, not on achieving the badge. Lessons take place in a 25-metre fitness and diving pool. Children are under the supervision of the swimming instructor for the entire lesson; parents do not need to participate in the lessons.
A group that practises tail swimming. The admission requirement is the ability to swim 50 metres, as well as diving and floating skills. You can bring your own mermaid tail to the course or borrow one from Kuohu. The course immerses you in “underwater” life as a mermaid or fish. The course consists of four sessions, after which it is possible to continue to an advanced course. Children are under the supervision of a swimming instructor for the entire lesson, so parents do not need to participate in the lessons.
Learn swimming techniques and have fun at the same time!
The children’s water games club is aimed at 9-13-year-olds who can swim and enjoy being in the water.
Each session includes some swimming technique practice as well as other water activities (e.g. water games, diving, water running, water training, water rescue, water slides, diving, SUP boarding, mermaid tail swimming/monofin swimming). The aim is to get children to exercise in a variety of ways at the swimming pool, learn good swimming techniques and enjoy the fun of water sports.
